PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND

In Great Britain school begins at the age of five. Many boys and girls usually leave school at the age of sixteen.

In England the school year begins in September, but not always on the first day of the month, as school never begins on Monday. The English think that Monday is not a good day to start school. So pupils usually begin their school year on the first Tuesday of September (not always on the 1st of September as we do). The weather is usually fine. It is warm. The sky is often blue and the sun is bright. Little children going to school with their parents on their first school day look so clean and nice. They don’t have any bags or books with them, as there is no need for these things on their first day at school. Pupils will get them later. They will get exercise-books, pencils, pens, rulers and rubbers too.

Classes usually begin at nine. Pupils have a glass of milk or a glass of orange juice at eleven. At half past twelve or at one o’clock they usually have lunch — meat, pudding, juice, an apple or a cake. Their classes are not formal. They often sit an the carpet on the floor and listen to their teacher. They draw or play games. They often look at the animals they have at school — hamsters, rabbits or hares. Sometimes there are birds or fish in their classrooms.

Teachers usually read fairy-tales and stories to them or sometimes they tell them something interesting. English pupils often play outdoors.

1. English pupils often leave school at the age of fourteen.

2. The school year always begins on the first of September.

3. English school never begins on Monday.

New Year’s Day

I like New Year’s Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year. Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year’s Day.

The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don’t go to school and my parents don’t go to work.

Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top. My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake. All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well.

We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. At 12 o’clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, «Best wishes for the New Year!». I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

The New Year’s Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year’s Eve. I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives. My parents put their presents under the New Year’s tree. We don’t go to bed till morning, we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes. I enjoy this holiday very much.

THE WANDERING SHIP.

In the old days when ships crossed the seas and oceans under sails, every trip was an adventure. In 1872 an American ship was crossing the Atlantic from New York to Portugal. It was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when Captain Moorhouse saw another ship. He knew the ship. It was the “Marie Celeste” which he had seen some weeks before when it was leaving New York. The captain of the “Marie Celeste”, Briggs, had taken his wife and his two-years-old daughter on the trip.

Soon captain Moorhouse saw that something was wrong on the “Marie Celeste”. He sailed his ship nearer the “ Marie Celeste”. Captain Moorhouse and his sailors could see that there was nobody on the “Marie Celeste”. The captain and some of his men went to the ship in a boat. But they found nobody there. Everybody had left the ship. But why had they done so? There were no

signs of a fight. Everything was in its place. Why had all the people left a good ship in the middle of the Atlantic and disappeared? That is the question which many people have tried to answer since that time. But nobody will know the answer. No man who had left the “Marie Celeste” was seen again.

Captain Moorhouse and his men saw no signs of panic on the ship. Captain Brigg`s watch lay on his table. There was a letter near it which somebody had just begun to write. The ship` s papers had gone, but the log was here. In some of the men` s boxes there was money. The most interesting thing was the fact that somebody had taken away a piece of planking. But why?

Some people thought that the sailors had killed the captain and his family and gone away in a boat. But there were no signs of a fight. Other people thought that many of the sailors had been ill and had died. Then the others left the ship and went away in a boat. But nobody knows the true story of the “Marie Celeste”

The Mosquitia People

A military helicopter lifted off from an airstrip near the town of Catacamas, Honduras, and headed towards the mountains of La Mosquitia on the northern horizon. Below, farms gradually gave way to steep slopes, some covered with unbroken rain forest, others partially stripped for cattle ranching. Picking his way through the summits, the pilot headed for a valley. Flocks of egrets flew below. Trees were swaying with the movement of unseen monkeys.

There were no signs of human life — not a road, a trail, or a wisp of smoke.

Among the passengers stepping from the helicopter was an archaeologist named Chris Fisher. The valley was in the region long rumored to conceal a mythic metropolis built of white stone, also known as the Lost City of the Monkey God. Chris Fisher did not believe in such legends. But he did believe that the valley contained the ruins of a real lost city, abandoned for at least half a millennium. Mosquitia lies on the frontier of Mesoamerica, close to the territory which used to be occupied by the Maya. While the Maya are among the most studied of ancient cultures in the Americans, the people of Mosquitia are among the most mysterious. Explorers and early aviators spoke of a ruined city rising above the jungle, others repeated tales recorded by Hernan Cortes in 1526, of fabulously rich towns hidden in the Honduran interior. Anthropologists who spent time with the Indians of Mosquitia heard stories of a «White House», a refuge where indigenous people retreated from the Spanish conquest, never to be seen again.

When archaeologists first began to explore Mosquitia in the 1930s, they uncovered some settlements, suggesting that the area was once occupied by the widespread, sophisticated culture- not surprising considering that the region lay at the crossroads of trade and travel between the Maya and other Mesoamericans to the north, west and south. The Mosquitia people probably adopted some aspects of Maya culture. But their exact relationship to their imposing neighbours remains unknown. Some archeologists have proposed that a group of Maya warriors may

have taken control of Mosquitia. Others think that the local culture simply adopted some characteristics of the adjacent impressive civilization.

When so little is known, anything is possible. Chris Fisher believed that he would be able to learn more about this under-studied culture.

All the slopes of La Mosquitia were used for agriculture.

Dear Ann,

Thank you for your letter. It was great to get some news from you.

I have already been at home for a week because of the flu. I can’t say that I’m having a good time, but I’m trying to enjoy myself.

I’m reading an interesting book about Mel Fisher. Have you ever heard of him? He was an explorer and a treasure hunter.

When he was a boy, his favourite book was Treasure Island. Mel dreamed about travelling round the world, exiting adventures and treasures.

When Mel grew up, he didn’t forget about dream. It took him 16 years of hard work. He looked for treasure from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and the Santa Margarita: Spanish ships which had sunk in 1662, near Florida. In 1985 Mel and his team found over 40tons of silver and gold. There were Spanish coins, gold bars, wonderful decorations, royal plates and dishes and other historical things.

Mel gave part of the found treasure to a museum which was then named the Mel Fisher`s Treasure Museum. Nowadays this museum in Florida is very popular among children and teenagers who like stories about pirates and their treasure.

Later Mel Fisher found some more ships, which were full of different historical works of art and so he has become a famous person. Nobody else has found so many fantastic and valuable things.

Would you like to find treasure? What would you do with the treasure you found?

I would like to take part in the expedition of treasure hunters and find a bag full of treasure. But I haven’t decided what I would do with the treasure.

Have you got a dream? Do you believe that it can come true? The book about Mel Fisher says it`s possible,

Sorry, but I have to finish the letter. The doctor has come.

Write back, please.

Beast wishes,

Andrew

CROCROSSWORDS

The crossword (puzzle) first appeared on December 21, 1913. Arthur Wynne created it for the New York World newspaper. Wynne gave 35 clues and called it a word-cross. The puzzle was a great success. The cross-word, as it called today, is the world’s most popular game. Nearly 90 percent of the world’s newspapers publish them. In the United States there are nearly thirty million fans of this game.

Most forms of games require a partner. Crosswords do not. This is, perhaps, the reason why they attract so much attention.

Why do people do crosswords? Maybe for educational value. Most fans say that they play crosswords to check their abilities and their speed in doing the puzzle. The more they play, the more they become to solve the most difficult crosswords.
