In my opinion…

From my point of view… — C

I reckon…  —

I advise… —

Youd better do…

You should do.…

How old are you?

—   I’m 15 years old.

What’s your hobby and why are you interested in it?

 — My hobby is swimming. I’m interested in it because I adore swimming — it makes me cheerful and confident.

How much time a week do you spend on your hobby?

 —  As a rule, I spend on it about 4 hours a week.

What hobbies are the most popular with teenagers nowadays?

 — From my point of view the most popular hobbies with teenagers now are computer games and some extreme sports like snowboarding.

Why do you think people take up hobbies?

 — In my opinion people take up hobbies in order to find new friends, to get some new skills and just to feel happier.

What would you advise a person who wants to start a hobby?

You should find a hobby which will give you pleasure. If I were you I would go to the nearest sports club and find out what they offer…

-Why people like travelling.

-What way of travelling you prefer and why.

-Whether you prefer to be a package tourist or to be a backpacking traveler. Why.

«And now I am going to talk about travelling.

People may travel for different reasons. For one group of people it may be the chance  to spend their vacation at a completely different place from the one they are used to. For others it may be the way of living — their lifestyle.

Personally I prefer sight-seeing type of travelling. As I am keen on history I cannot stand the idea of not visiting all the historical places in Europe or Asia. What is more, I prefer travelling by bus as it allows me to spend a lot of time on the road and think about everything I need. Besides, it is much cheaper than travelling by plane.

According to this I may conclude that I am an absolutely backpacking traveler. The idea that you can spend one day in one city and move to another part of the country the following day appeals to me very much.

In the end I would like to say, that travelling broadens our minds and gives us an amazing experience we will never forget. Besides, you will be left with unforgettable  memories. What can be better?»

Recycling is a technology that helps protect the environment and cut down on usage of raw materials. The steel, paper and glass industries recycle a lot. The largest recycler is the steel industry. It recovers more than 70 per cent of its original materials. For example, since 1988 they have produced the majority of new metal cans from old ones. Metal parts for cars and planes are other examples of recycling steel. Fragments of waste glass are widely used in construction. For producing writing paper and pens, used packing boxes are an ideal material. They are cheap and easy to recycle. Nowadays more and more recycling centres are appearing in our towns and cities.

Nowadays solar energy is widely used as an alternative form of power. Solar panels transform the energy from the sun into electricity. The first plane that does not need fuel was constructed in France in 2015. It uses only the sun’s energy. The panels are placed on the huge wings of the plane. It doesn’t fly very fast. Solar energy can make the plane move at only 140 miles an hour. However, the plane is able to travel round the world. It is safe and can successfully cross areas of bad weather. In the future, engineers hope to construct a model that people can fly in. Our dream of environmentally friendly transport may come true very soon. Would you like to take a flight on the solar plane?

We are always told that we should clean our teeth regularly to keep them healthy and to have fresh breath. It is believed that people started using a kind of paste to clean their teeth around 5000 years ago. However, the ingredients of these tooth powders were very different from ours. For example, the people of ancient Egypt used salt, mint, dried flowers and pepper to create tooth powder. Later, in the 18th century, in some countries in Europe, people brushed their teeth with burnt bread. The first toothpaste appeared in 1890, in Great Britain. At first it was sold in jars. Then special tubes were designed to make the toothpaste more comfortable to use.

Do you know why it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter? Most people believe that it is because the Earth is closer to the Sun in the summer and farther from it in the winter. But it is not like this at all! In fact, the distance between the Earth and the Sun is largest in July and smallest in January! Scientists suggest that the reason for different summer and winter temperatures is the angle of the Sun’s rays. In the summer, the rays reach the Earth almost at a right angle. Due to this, the rays are not spread out and a smaller area of the planet’s surface gets the energy. In the winter, the angle changes and the Sun’s rays are spread out over a larger area. Besides this, the long nights and short days do not give enough time for the land to warm up.

A robot is a machine that does work for people. The word ‘robot’ appeared in the 1920s and it was first used in a science fiction story. In real life, the robot was invented later, in 1954. There are different kinds of robots which are used in different industries. Most of them are operated with the help of a computer program. Instead of humans, robots do hard and boring work in unpleasant or dangerous environments. They usually work faster and more accurately than people. They never get tired and do not make mistakes. Nowadays robots are often used for domestic needs – to clean houses or to look after sick and elderly people. Scientists say that soon robots will become a normal part of our life, like mobiles and computers today.

Nowadays people can’t imagine their kitchen without a refrigerator. The first refrigerators appeared at the end of the 18th century. They looked different: they were just iceboxes. The refrigerators of the past were just wooden boxes, sometimes lined inside with metal. People put ice into the box and then placed the food inside to keep it cool. The refrigerator, similar to the one that we have now, was produced by General Electric in 1911, in France. It was very expensive. In those days, with the same money you could buy two cars. Today, in developed countries almost every family has enough money to buy a refrigerator for their kitchen. It’s hard to imagine how difficult and uncomfortable our lives would be without a refrigerator.

Without the energy from the Sun, the Earth would have no life at all. Nowadays everyone knows that the Sun is a star. Like all stars, the Sun is a great burning ball of gases. To us, it seems large and red. The other stars look white or light blue because they are much farther from us than the Sun. In the past, many people believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe. They thought that the Sun and the stars went round it. Only in 1543, a great Polish scientist published a book in which he tried to prove a different point of view. According to him, the Earth and the other planets moved round the Sun. Those people who supported the scientist were often imprisoned and even killed.

The carrot is a root vegetable which consists mostly of water and sugar. The carrots that we eat today originated from the wild ones which grew in Europe and Asia. The vegetable tasted sweet and the people began to use it as food.

There are two main types of carrots. There are eastern carrots that have dark purple roots and western carrots with orange roots. In fact, orange carrots first appeared in Europe in 1721. Dutch farmers selected orange carrots because orange is the colour of the Dutch Royal Family. Now orange carrots are widely grown all over the world. In modern households carrots are cooked and eaten in different ways. The vegetable is boiled, fried, baked and eaten raw. People also make juice from it.

Since 2007 high-speed trains have become a common type of transport in Europe. They make it possible to cut travel times by hours. The trains travel at 350 kilometres an hour, and this is not the limit! The only problem for the engineers is the loud noise the trains produce. People living in the areas the trains travel through suffer from the noise greatly. For the passengers, the situation is different. For their comfort, all the carriages are made sound-proof from the inside. Travelling on high-speed trains is comfortable and pleasant. In the future, a high-speed railroad network could cover most of Europe. For example, a trip from Paris to Rome could take only 3 hours!

Venus is one of the hottest planets in the Solar system. The temperature on its surface is 482 degrees. This unfriendly place looks much the same as the Earth 4 billion years ago. Both planets were formed from the same gas cloud, but Venus lost most of its water and atmosphere. This happened because the planet turns very slowly. As a result, now it has no magnetic field to protect it from the Sun’s winds. The planet has turned into a lifeless desert. Most space modules that were sent to Venus, could not work on the planet more than two hours. The acidic clouds and high pressure quickly made them absolutely useless.

Studies of the atmosphere first received technical support in 1912. Equipment to measure temperature and pressure was invented in Germany. But the question was how to raise it high into the air. In 1921, Russian engineers suggested using planes. The special equipment was put on planes that made regular flights. Thanks to this, scientists got a lot of new information about the structure of the atmosphere. Nowadays scientists use modern flying laboratories to study the structure of clouds at different levels. Unlike the first planes, these laboratories can work in any weather and are able to predict climate changes.

Wombats are exotic animals that only live in Australia. They have become an unofficial symbol of the country. In 1974 a wombat appeared on an Australian stamp for the first time. Since then it has been regularly used on different Australian stamps and coins. Wombats look like little bears and prefer grass to meat. They also love eating berries, plant roots and mushrooms. Like camels, wombats drink little water because there is enough water in fresh grass. Wombats spend most of their life in holes under the ground. With their strong arms and long nails they are able to dig very long and complex tunnels. Fortunately, wombats have few enemies in the animal world. Most wombats live around 15 years.

The word ‘tsunami’ can be translated from Japanese as ‘big wave’. It describes a natural process that can be dangerous for people and their homes. Most of the huge waves appear after earthquakes. Most waves are born in the Indian and the Pacific Oceans where volcanoes are active. The mass of water rises from the bottom of the ocean and moves to the shore. It moves at a speed of a plane and can be up to 40 meters high. The wave is very powerful and dangerous. In 2004, a tsunami happened in the Indian Ocean. It was one of most terrible natural disasters in history. It hit 14 countries bordering the Indian Ocean. Thousands of people were killed or went missing.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales. It is located in a national park. It stands at 1085 metres above sea level, and it is often described as the busiest mountain in Great Britain. Snowdon is very popular with tourists. If you are strong and brave enough to get to the top, you can enjoy wonderful views from there. On a clear day, you can see as far as Ireland! During the summer months there is a café at the top. There, tourists can get a welcome cup of tea, or soup if the weather is cold. If you feel too tired to walk back, you can always take the train down the mountain. The mountain railway was built in 1896. It is safe, and there have never been any accidents on this route.

Most people enjoy watching the night sky. And the brightest object in the sky is the Moon. Every night the Moon rises in the East and sets in the West. It takes about 27 days to go around the Earth, and it’s an interesting fact that we always see the same side of the Moon. The Moon is the closest object to the Earth. It would take us only 13 hours to get to the Moon by rocket. If we were able to travel at the speed of light, it would take a bit less than two seconds.

There is a very thin atmosphere on the Moon. Life is not possible there. In spite of this, the Moon can be used as a base for space exploration and even for space tourism. Some space companies say that they will be able to take tourists to the Moon as soon as in 2020.

People have always wanted to discover new things and new worlds. We have built spaceships to go to other planets and are planning to visit other galaxies one day. Meanwhile, we know very little about our own planet. The oceans, which cover 70 percent of the planet, are an unknown world to us. The Pacific Ocean is the largest one. The lowest point on the Earth is also there. It is called Challenger Deep and it was discovered in 1875. The Pacific Ocean stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the coast of Antarctica, but most of its water is in the warm tropics, which makes it warm. A lot of fish and animals live in the Pacific Ocean. The place is still waiting for researchers to discover its secrets for us.

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean of the world. It covers the northern polar region of the Earth. The Arctic region is a very cold place. The lowest recorded temperature there is minus 68 degrees. In spite of the cold, a lot of animals live on the Arctic ice. The polar bear is one of them. Now, due to global warming, the polar bear is in a serious trouble. The thing is that polar bears hunt seals and they need ice to do this. The bears wait for seals on the ice, hunt them in the water and go back to the shore. If the ice is too thin, it breaks under the bears’ heavy bodies and they may drown. The situation is getting worse and some researchers say the ocean may become ice-free as soon as 2050.

In 1642 a French student invented the first mechanical calculator. He was only 18 and the counting machine was a present for his father. The father worked as a tax collector and the young man wanted to make his job easier.

The talented inventor made several machines, but nobody was interested. The young man was ahead of his time. Many years passed before people realized how useful these machines could be and started mass producing them.

Today most mechanical calculators have been replaced with electronic models. These small devices can perform a lot of mathematical operations. You just need to enter the numbers by pressing the keys and you’ll see the final result on the screen in no time.

One day a young man who lived near the lake in a small American town asked himself, “Why can’t people ski on water if they can ski on snow?” With his brother’s help he constructed several models of skis to test his ideas. He experimented on the local lake for a few days and created skis suitable for the water. This happened in 1922. The young man, who was only 18 at that time, didn’t patent his invention. However, he performed a lot of shows across the country that made him and the sport of water skiing popular. Later, he was recognized as the creator of a new sport – water skiing.

Water skiing equipment has been greatly improved since that time, and the number of people who enjoy this sport is growing in many countries.

The ninth planet of the solar system was discovered not long ago. It happened in 1930. Scientists had been hunting for the planet for a long time. They had calculated its probable position, but there was no proof that the planet really existed. It was too far away for the telescopes of that time to find it. It’s worth mentioning that the first photos of the planet were taken by a very young researcher. He was only twenty-four and had no formal education in astronomy. However he was deeply involved in the search for the ninth planet. The planet at the edge of the solar system was called Pluto, after the Roman god. The name for the planet was suggested by an 11-year-old British girl.

The first vacuum cleaner was designed in 1869. Since then, vacuum cleaners have changed a lot. Nowadays the robot vacuum cleaner is getting more and more popular. This device cleans a house automatically. Following a programme, the robot drives slowly around the house and makes it cleaner. It operates with brushes and a tube. The robot is so flexible that it can get under a table or sofa or reach dust in corners. Some advanced models can also wash floors of all kinds. These functions are provided by a complicated electronic system and sensors inside. The vacuum cleaner looks like a plate and can be kept in the corner. It is friendly to children and animals and works on electricity.

It’s hard to find a more popular Russian symbol than the traditional Russian doll, or Matryoshka. It is well-known all over the world. The first set of dolls appeared in Moscow in 1890. It consisted of eight dolls. All of them were children: seven girls, one boy, and a baby. In those times, Matryoshkas were not meant as toys for children as their price was very high. Mostly, adults bought them as presents or home decorations. There was a belief that if you put a note with a wish into Matryoshka, it would come true. At the beginning of the 20th century, Russia started to export their national dolls abroad.

Global warming is a result of human activity. In 1985 there was a big conference in Austria where 89 climate researchers from different countries took part. After long discussions the scientists declared that the climate of the planet had changed. Indeed, it is warmer now than it was years ago. It can be clearly seen in the north. In the Arctic some places are ice-free now and polar bears have lost the place where they lived. The sea level has risen as well. The situation is getting more and more serious. Global warming is a great problem which needs to be solved in the near future.

English is the third most-spoken language in the world after Chinese and Spanish. Over 840 million people speak English as a first or second language. It is an official language of 67 countries. 80 percent of information stored on all computers in the world is in English. The vocabulary of the English language is the biggest in the world. A new word is added into English almost every two hours. The English language is said to be one of the happiest languages in the world. The word happy is used more often than the word sad! That’s a good reason to learn this language, isn’t it?

The human brain is the most complex and remarkable organ of the body. It controls everything we do – thinking, learning, and even heart rate. Though the brain makes up only 2 percent of the body’s weight, it uses around 20 percent of its energy. It works 24 hours a day. Even when a person is sleeping, the brain is working hard to keep other organs functioning. Most people think that our brain is more active during the daytime because it needs to deal with a great amount of information. In fact, that’s not true. The brain is far more active when a person is sleeping! However, scientists don’t yet have any explanation for this fact.

We don’t realize how lucky we are to have clean water whenever we want. A lot of people around the world do not have such an opportunity. Did you know that more than 750 million people on the Earth do not have clean water to drink? Meanwhile, a lot of water is wasted and polluted. In 1993 the United Nations decided to celebrate the World Day for Water. Nowadays a lot of special events are organized in different countries. Their aim is to make people understand how important clean water is for their health, environment and agriculture. Water is essential for our life. We should think about saving it, as the fresh water supplies are limited. We need to keep it clean for ourselves and for future generations.

Earth Hour is an event that encourages people around the world to switch off electricity at the same time for one hour. Of course, switching off the lights for an hour makes a small difference to the amount of energy we use. But the aim of the event is not to save energy but to get people to think about the planet they live on. Earth Hour started in Australia in 2007. More and more countries join the ecological movement every year. Now, millions of people from 178 countries switch off their lights for 60 minutes at the end of March. People in Russia participate in this event too – large office buildings and small private houses go dark for Earth Hour.

Our planet is the only planet in the Solar System where rainbows are possible. They are not visible in big cities, due to pollution and smog. But if you are travelling after rain has fallen in the countryside or walking on the beach, you have a good chance to see a rainbow. The rainbow is a multi-coloured arc which appears in the sky. When you see a rainbow, the sun is always behind you and it is raining in front of you. It is impossible to get to the end of the rainbow and to touch it. When you move, the rainbow moves too. We have always learned that rainbows have 7 colours. However, until the 17th century, people used to think there were only 5 colours in the rainbow.

Though most people believe that the tomato is a vegetable, this plant is actually a fruit. Tomato is a fruit because it has seeds inside like apples, oranges, lemons, and all other types of fruit. The tomato comes from Central and South America. When tomatoes were brought to England in the 17th century, people thought that they were poisonous and refused to eat them. Only in 1820, Robert Johnson proved that tomatoes were absolutely safe and would not affect people’s health. He ate a basket of tomatoes in public. Nowadays, the tomato is widely used in all types of food. There are many different kinds of tomatoes – over 7,500! They differ in size, shape, colour and taste.

The Channel Tunnel is a rail tunnel beneath the English Channel which links Great Britain and France. It is considered to be one of the most amazing engineering constructions in Europe. The second longest undersea tunnel in the world was opened in 1994. It is said that 13,000 workers and engineers participated in the construction project. The Channel Tunnel contains three tunnels. The south tunnel is for people who are travelling from France to the UK, the north tunnel takes passengers from the UK to France. Nowadays it takes 35 minutes to go from Paris to London in the Channel Tunnel. The third tunnel is a service tunnel. It is not used by passengers.

The construction of the longest and the deepest railroad tunnel was finished in Europe. The tunnel runs through the Alps and links the north and south of Europe. The length of the tunnel is 57 kilometres. It runs straight from beginning to end. It will allow passenger trains to travel more quickly through the mountains. Modern technologies ensure safety and security when the trains go through the tunnel. The great project started in 2009 and it took 17 years to complete. It is considered to be one of the most amazing engineering constructions in Europe.

They are getting dangerously close to space stations and there is a great possibility of an accident. Space stations could be completely destroyed by the rubbish. In 1983, a tiny piece of paint from a satellite made a big hole in the side window of a spaceship. There is a great need to “clean up” space and to take away 3,000 tons of space rubbish. To solve the problem, scientists and engineers are designing special spaceships that will collect and recycle space rubbish.

    1. You are going to give a talk about your school.

    — what your typical school day is like

    — what your favourite subject is

    — what you like most about your school

    I would like to tell you a few words about my school. My typical school day usually starts at 8.30 am. We typically have 6 or 7 lessons a day. I usually have lunch after the fourth lesson. When all my lessons are over, I usually have one or two extra classes. We are getting ready to take our school-leaving exams.

    My favourite school subject is English. Firstly because I think studying languages helps you improve your memory and makes your brain work better. Besides, I enjoy studying English. I like the way it sounds. I enjoy listening to songs and watching films in English.

    There are a lot of things I like about my school. First, I really like my teachers. They are very understanding, helpful and are very good at explaining things. Besides. I like our school canteen. It is very comfortable, looks nice and the food is really tasty.

    So, I am a lucky one as I really like my school and it is very important as we spend most of our day at school.

    1. You are going to give a talk about books.

    — whether reading is still popular with teenagers, and why, or why not

    — what kind of books you like reading

    — why many people prefer e-books to paper books

    I would like to tell you a few words about what I think about books and reading. To my mind, reading is not so popular nowadays as it was a couple of decades before. There are several reasons for this. First, teenagers now have far more ways to entertain themselves. We have an opportunity to play computer games, listen to countless number of songs and watch any films we like on the Internet.

    As for me, I like reading very much. My favourite kind of books is adventure stories. I like adventure stories because they make my monotonous life more exciting and interesting, give me an opportunity to travel around the world.

    Most people nowadays prefer e-books to paper ones, as paper books cost more and occupy a lot of place in your home. Some really huge paper books are too heavy to be taken with you. As for the e-book, you can take it with you wherever you go.

    So, in conclusion, despite the fact that reading is not so popular nowadays, it continues to remain one of my favourite pastimes.

    3. You are going to give a talk about your school homework

    • how long it takes you to do your homework

    • what subjects you usually start with and why

    • whether schoolchildren should be given more or less homework and why

    I would like to tell you a few words about my school homework. It always takes me a great deal of time to prepare for all my lessons: usually about 4 hours or even more. I have to spend much more time on my homework in the ninth grade because I am getting ready to take my school-leaving exams in four subjects and I pay special attention to these subjects.

    I usually start doing my homework with humanities as they are most tiresome for me. You have to read so much and to remember plenty of information. It is very difficult for me as I don’t have very good memory. So, if I put them off till the end of the day I am too tired to do them.

    In my opinion, schoolchildren nowadays are too busy at school. We have more subjects than our parents did, we get more homework. So, we almost don’t have any free time to relax, to hang out with friends, to do sports and to to enjoy our hobbies. As a result, many of us have poor health, get tired very quickly and become nervous. And this may lead to worse marks at school. That is why, I believe, schoolchildren should be given less homework.

    1. about travelling.

    — why most people enjoy travelling

    — what people like doing while travelling

    — what place you would like to go to and why

    I would like to tell you a few words about travelling. I think most people enjoy travelling because it is a good way to relax and to experience new positive emotions. It gives you an opportunity to communicate with different people and get to know their lifestyles and traditions.

    To my mind, most people enjoy sightseeing while on holiday. They like visiting places which are of great historical and cultural interest and learning about different architectural styles. Many people, especially women find great pleasure in shopping. For example, in Milan there are great sales in shops when you can buy brand clothes much cheaper than the same things in Moscow.

    As for me, I would like to visit Japan. I am very interested in the customs and traditions of this country. This country seems another world to me. It is an Asian country and differs a lot from European countries and Russia as well. There is a kind of mystery in it I’d like to uncover.

    I hope my dream will come true some day.

    1. You are going to give a talk about TV.

    • whether watching TV is still a popular pastime with teenagers, and why

    • how many hours a week you watch TV

    • what you dislike most about TV

    I would like to tell you a few words about what I think of TV. I believe watching TV is very popular with teenagers nowadays. There are so many kinds of television now: ordinary, cable, satellite. There are hundreds of different channels where everyone can find something to his/her liking. I think numerous sitcoms and reality shows are the most favourite programmes among teenagers.

    As for me, I don’t spend much time watching TV. It is usually one hour a day on week days and about three hours a day on Saturday and Sunday, that is about 11 hours a week. I cannot afford more as I am very busy preparing for my school-leaving exams. Besides, I don’t think watching much television is safe for your health.

    I like watching TV in general. It helps you to relax after a hard day. But at the same time I believe there is too much violence on TV nowadays. There are plenty of thrillers with very violent murders. And they are often on during the day when children can watch them. It is very harmful for children’s psycho. They may get nervous or aggressive.

    So, to my mind watching TV is a good pastime, but one should carefully choose what programmes to watch.

    1. about your free time.

    -whether you have a lot of free time and why

    — what you enjoy doing in your free time

    -what your Sunday afternoons are like

    I would like to tell you a few words about my free time. At the moment I am very busy preparing for my school-leaving exams and have one or two extra classes a day. That is why I can spare only a little time for my leisure activities.

    One of my favourite pastimes is watching films. I really love going to the cinema. But unfortunately, we don’t have a cinema here in Morshansk. So we have to go to Tambov. It’s not very cheap. So, we don’t go there very often. But I often watch films on the Internet and TV. I prefer melodramas. Besides, I enjoy going to the discos at the weekends. I adore dancing and can dance for three to four hours at a stretch. Besides, I like spending time chatting with my friend. We have a lot in common with her and there are so many things to talk about!

    Sunday is my only day off when I have neither lessons nor extra classes. So I try to get the most out of it. My best friend and I usually meet at noon at my or her place and make a home cinema for ourselves. We buy plenty of snacks beforehand and enjoy watching films on the Internet chewing something! After that we discuss the film and everything that happened to us during the week.

    1. about whether and seasons.

    — which of the four seasons you like most

    -how the earth’s climate has changed recently

    — whether you trust the weather forecast and why

    I would like to tell you a few words about weather and climate.

    As for me, my favourite season is summer. Fist of all, we have our longest holidays in summer – three months of rest and relaxation! Second, there are so many things you can do in summer! The weather is hot and sunny. You can swim in the river, lie in the sun and get a beautiful tan. Besides, I try to keep fit and do sports. Summer is a good time for cycling. I enjoy cycling in the country when there is a lot of vegetation and birds singing around you.

    As for the earth’s climate, it has changed a lot recently. They say the climate has become warmer and the average temperature has increased by about 1 degree. I am not sure if that is true. On one hand, we really don’t have such cold winters as before. On the other hand, summers are often not so warm now. But what I am absolutely sure about is weather has become very changeable. The temperature can fall or rise considerably overnight.

    As for weather forecasts, I don’t trust them very much as they rarely come true nowadays. There were many cases they let me down. Maybe because weather has become unpredictable.

    1. About public holidays in Russia.

    — what public holidays are celebrated in Russia

    — what your favourite public holiday is and why

    — how your favorite public holiday is celebrated in your town.

    I would like to tell you a few words about public holidays in Russia. We celebrate the following public holidays: New Year’s Day, Defender of the Fatherland Day, Women Day, May Day, Victory Day and Independence day.

    As for me, my favourite public holiday is New Year’s Day. First of all, because, we have ten days off devoted to the holiday. Besides, I like all the traditions connected with it: decorating the New Year’s tree, meeting Father Frost and Snow Maiden, setting off fireworks, exchanging presents and so on.

    In the town Where I live celebrating New Year’s day usually starts at home with the family. Family members usually meet about an hour before the midnight and see the old year off. Then we see the new year in and while the clock on Spasskaya tower chimes twelve we make a wish. After that many of us go to the central square to watch a New Year’s show prepared by our local actors with dances, songs, different contests and presents from Father Frost and Snow Maiden. It is usually great fun!

    1. You are going to give a talk about keeping fit.

    why a healthy lifestyle is more popular nowadays;

    · what you do to keep fit;

    · what sports activities are popular with teenagers in your region.

    I would like to tell you a few words about healthy lifestyle.

    I believe a healthy lifestyle has become more popular nowadays. First, people are more health-conscious thanks to mass media like TV or magazines. They promote healthy lifestyle by showing successful slim athletic people. There is also much information about healthy eating and keeping fit. Besides, people have more opportunities to live a healthy life now. We have more sport centres and devices to cook healthy food.

    As for me, I don’t do much to keep fit. I just do morning exercises for 15 minutes every day, try to eat regularly small amounts of food 4 or 5 times a day and try to avoid eating sweet things.

    As for sport activities popular with teenagers in our region, I believe they prefer athletics. There are many sport clubs where you can do athletics. Our local authorities also hold different athletics competitions quite regularly. Besides, fitness training is also popular among teenagers. Girls like attending non-equipment fitness group classes, boys prefer equipment-based workouts at a gym.

    So, I believe healthy life style is popular nowadays thanks to mass media and greater opportunities we have.

    10. You are going to give a talk about your school. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         what you like most about your school;

    ·         what weekday you find the most difficult, and why;

    ·         what you would like to change in your school life.

    I would like to tell you a few words about my school.

    There are a lot of things I like about my school. First, I really like my teachers. They are very understanding, helpful and are very good at explaining things. Besides. I like our school canteen. It is very comfortable, looks nice and the food is really tasty.

    As for the most difficult day for me, I believe it is Tuesday. We have 7 lessons this day among which there are 4 subjects that require plenty of reading and learning: History, Geography, Chemistry and Literature. And as I don’t have very good memory, it is quite difficult for me to get ready for these subjects. Besides, I have 2 extra classes in Social studies and Maths after lessons. I am getting ready for my school-leaving exams. So I am extremely tired at the end of the day.

    Though I like my school very much, there are some things I would like to change. It would be nice to have more parties than we do now. We are too focused on studying and lack entertainment. I believe that too much work and no fun is not very good for students’ health.

    So, I am a lucky one as I really like my school, though some things might be improved.

    11. You are going to give a talk about the place where you live. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         what your city, town or village is famous for;

    ·         what your favourite place in your city, town or village is, and why you like it;

    ·         whether you are going to stay in your city, town or village after leaving school or move to another place, and why.

    I would like to tell you a few words about my town.

    I live in a small town called Morshansk not far from Tambov. There are a few things my town is famous for. First of all, it is our beautiful Troitsky Cathedral. It is hard to believe, but it is the third largest cathedral in Russia! Besides, we have a very good Historical and art museum rich in paintings of famous artists and unique ancient Russian wooden sculpture.

    As for my favourite place in my town, it is our pine-tree forest. It is a very picturesque place. Sometimes It seems to me that it is this forest that you can see on the pictures of the famous Russian painter Shishkin. Besides, the air is so fresh there. I like to go jogging there from spring to autumn and go skiing in winter.

    Though I like my town, I am going to move to a larger city after leaving school, because there are few education and job opportunities in it. There are no higher education institutions and the unemployment rate is very high here.

    So, I like my town, but I have to leave it after school as I want to get good education and job.

    12. You are going to give a talk about foreign languages. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         why lots of people learn foreign languages nowadays;

    ·         why you have chosen to do the English exam this year;

    ·         what you did to prepare for your English exam.

    I would like to tell you a few words about learning foreign languages.

    I think lots of people learn foreign languages nowadays because international relations in all spheres of economy are becoming stronger and stronger. So, companies need specialists of all kinds with the knowledge of foreign languages. That’s why people who want to be successful in their career study languages.

    As for me, I have chosen English as my school-leaving exam this year, as it is my favourite subject and I am quite good at it. Besides, I think it is one of the most useful and important subjects in modern world and the knowledge of English will help me to get good education and be successful in my career.

    I did my best to prepare for my English exam: read plenty of texts and expanded my vocabulary, watched films in English to improve my listening skills, did grammar exercises. Besides, communicating with my pen friends (writing messages and chatting via Skype) helped me a lot.

    So, learning languages is very important in modern world, that is why I have chosen to take an exam in English this year.

    13.  You are going to give a talk about pets. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         why people keep pets;

    ·         what pets are most popular in big cities;

    ·         whether having pets is a big responsibility, and why.

    I would like to tell you a few words about pets.

    There are very many reasons why people keep pets at home. First, they help people not to feel lonely. They are very good friends. They give you unconditional love and are always faithful. Pets can improve your mood, they are always there for you if you feel down or depressed. Moreover, some scientists claim that pets can cure different diseases.

    I believe that in big cities budgies, fish, hamsters and other small pets that don’t need much space and to be walked out are most popular. I think so because there are fewer places you can walk your pets in large cities and the streets are a very dangerous place for them there. Besides, people have less time for walking with their pets as they spend much time getting to their work and back.

    To my mind, having pets is a big responsibility as you must know and do a lot to keep your pet healthy and happy. They cannot take care of themselves and totally depend on you.

    So, keeping pets at home has a lo lot benefits, but it is also a great responsibility.

    14. You are going to give a talk about the Internet. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         why today’s teenagers use the Internet so much;

    ·         how the Internet makes long-distance communication easier;

    ·         what dangers teenagers can face when they use the Internet.

    I would like to tell you a few words about the Internet.

    I believe today’s teenagers use the Internet so much because it is a perfect tool for getting information and entertaining. It is a combination of different kinds of mass media, means of communication and entertainment sources. You can get news, communicate with friends, read books, watch films, listen to music, play games and even shop on the Internet nowadays.

    The Internet makes long-distance communication much easier than it was before its invention. In case of ordinary mail, it took a letter several days or even weeks to reach the addressee. Now, the process takes just a few seconds even if the sender and the addressee are thousands of miles from each other.

    There are many dangers, however, teenagers can face on the Internet. First, they can watch video for adults which is not good for their psycho. Second, they can become a victim of cyberbulling and be piled with numerous nasty messages. Besides, they can become a victim of fraud while shopping online.

    So, the Internet is very useful, but parents must make sure their children use it in a proper way.

    15.You are going to give a talk about photography. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    • why people like taking pictures

    • why taking photos is more popular today than it was in the past

    • what the best photo you have ever taken is

    I would like to tell you a few words about photography.

    I believe people like taking pictures because photos help them to remember and keep in their memory forever the most important, happy and beautiful moments they experience in their life.

    To my mind, taking photos is more popular today as it has become much easier. We have got digital cameras that have simplified the whole process greatly. There is no film in digital cameras you have to develop. So, it saves money as there is no need to go to the photo lab and pay them to get the pictures. The moment you press the button, the photo is ready and you can see it. So, another plus is if the picture is not OK, you can re-take it.

    The best photo I have ever taken is the photo I took while going up on a very high mountain in a special means of transport. We were high up above very tall trees. The view below was really breathtaking! And the photo was wonderful too!

    As for me, I like taking pictures very much and always take my camera with me while travelling.

    16.You are going to give a talk about holidaysYou will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         what holidays are most popular in your country;

    ·         what your favourite holiday is and how you celebrate it;

    ·         if you prefer to give presents or to get presents, and why.

    I would like to tell you a few words about holidays.

    I believe the most popular holidays in my country are New Year’s Day and Victory day. People like to exchange presents and set off fireworks on New Year’s night. Victory Day is a special day for all the Russians. We feel proud of our grandparents who won victory over German fascists in 1945.

    As for me, my favourite holiday is New Year’s day. I usually start celebrating it at home with my family. All our family members usually meet about an hour before the midnight and see the old year off. Then we see the new year in and while the clock on Spasskaya tower chimes twelve we make a wish. After that my friends and I go to the central square to watch a New Year’s show prepared by our local actors with dances, songs, different contests and presents from Father Frost and Snow Maiden. It is usually great fun!

    For me giving presents and getting presents are equally pleasant. I love getting presents as I like the feeling of curiosity and expectation you experience while unwrapping them.. And I also like watching people feel happy getting presents from me.

    17.You are going to give a talk about the InternetYou will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         why using the Internet is so popular;

    ·         how the Internet can help students in their studies;

    ·         whether the Internet can be dangerous, and why.

    I would like to tell you a few words about the Internet.

    I believe the Internet is so popular nowadays because it is a perfect tool for getting information and entertaining. It is a combination of different kinds of mass media, means of communication and entertainment sources. You can get news, communicate with friends, read books, watch films, listen to music, play games and even shop on the Internet nowadays.

    The Internet can help students in their studies very much. It is a wonderful source of information. Most libraries have their own sites on the Internet now. You just type in the title of the book or even the topic you are searching for and have the result almost in no time. Besides, you can follow plenty of educational courses and get the tutor’s assistance on the Internet nowadays.

    There are many dangers, however, people can face on the Internet. First, they can become a victim of cyber-bulling and be piled with numerous nasty messages. Second, they can become a victim of fraud while shopping on-line. Besides, some personal or secret information can be stolen from your computer when you use the Internet.

    So, the Internet is very useful, but people must make sure they use it in a proper way.

    18.

    You are going to give a talk about travelling. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         why most people like travelling;

    ·         which season is the best for travelling in your opinion;

    ·         what means of transport is the best, and why.

    I would like to tell you a few words about travelling. I think most people enjoy travelling because it is a good way to relax and to experience new positive emotions. It gives you an opportunity to communicate with different people and get to know their lifestyles and traditions.

    To my mind, the best season for travelling is late spring (if you want to see as many interesting places as possible). It is the time when there is already a lot of vegetation and the trees are in blossom. But at the same time it is not so hat as in summer when travelling is really tiresome. But if the main aim of your travelling is lying somewhere on a seashore, swimming, getting a nice tan and doing nothing, the best season is summer, of course.

    I believe, the best means of transport is your own car. It is very convenient. First, you don’t have to wait for your bus or train at the station. It saves your time. Second, you can choose the route yourself to take the most of your trip and enjoy most picturesque places. Besides, you can stop any time you feel tired to stretch your legs after a long sitting or have a bite if you are hungry.

    19.You are going to give a talk about your career plans. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

    Remember to say:

    ·         what job you want to do in the future;

    ·         what two subjects you think are the most important for your future job, and why;

    ·         whether your family approve of your career choice or not.

    I would like to tell you a few words about my career plans.

    I am really interested in tourism and want to become a tour guide in the future. There are two reasons why I have chosen this job. First, I like travelling and sightseeing. Besides, I am very sociable and enjoy communicating with different people. I think this kind of job gives you such an opportunity.

    I think geography and history are the most important subjects for my future job as you have to know much and to tell people about the nature and history of different places, about their customs and traditions and different architectural styles. Besides, it would be also very useful to know foreign languages as there are often a lot of foreigners on excursions.

    All the members of my family approve of my choice. First of all, they believe I am the right person for the job as I am good at geography, history and English and very sociable too. Second, tourist business is actively developing and they think it will be easy to find a job.

    Методическая разработка по английскому языку (9 класс) на тему: Как готовиться к устной части ОГЭ по английскому языку?

    Как готовиться к устной части ОГЭ по английскому языку?

    Я бы советовала не только прорешивать такие варианты заданий, но и зазубрить несколько клише, которые помогут оформить речь при ответе на заковыристые вопросы:

    • Personally I think …
    • I prefer …
    • I’m not very keen on …
    • In my opinion/view …
    • My advice would be …
    • You should/could …
    • You’d better …

    А также при ответе внимательно слушать вопрос и повторять слова и структуру, чтобы не запутаться в грамматике.

    Ну и будет просто волшебно, если ученик вспомнит какие-то тематические слова и выражения, поэтому их желательно подучить (в кодификаторе есть список тем, которые должен знать 9-классник).

    А также постоянно напоминать ему, что нельзя отвечать односложно и начинать предложение со слова because, а также обращать внимание, что в одном вопросе может содержаться два вопросительных слова, и отвечать в этом случае нужно на оба вопроса (как в вопросе 2 в примере ниже).

    А теперь рассмотрим на примере, как делать задание 2.
    В задании подчеркнуты вопросительные слова, повторяющиеся почти во всех заданиях этого типа.

    Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.
    Remember that you have 60 seconds to answer each question.

    Tapescript for Task 2

    Electronic assistant: Hello! It’s the electronic assistant of the Hobby Center. We kindly ask you to take part in our survey. We need to find out how
    people feel about taking up hobbies in your region. Please answer six questions. The survey is anonymous – you don’t have to give your name. So, let’s get started.
    Electronic assistant: How old are you?
    Student: I’m fourteen years old.
    Electronic assistant: What is your hobby and why are you interested in it?
    Student: My hobby is swimming and I’m interested in it because I like water and can’t imagine my life without swimming.
    Electronic assistant: How much time a week do you spend on your hobby?
    Student: I go to the swimming pool twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.
    Electronic assistant: What hobbies are the most popular with teenagers nowadays?
    Student: Usually teenagers take up dancing, blogging or start playing computer games.
    Electronic assistant: Why do you think people take up hobbies?
    Student: Personally I think that people take up hobbies to develop physically and emotionally and to meet new people.
    Electronic assistant: What would you advise a person who wants to start a hobby?
    Student: I would advise a person who wants to start a hobby to be patient and hard-working because you must be serious about everything you do to achieve the best results in it.
    Electronic assistant: This is the end of the survey. Thank you very much for
    your cooperation.

    Как видите, все ответы повторяют слова вопроса, чтобы ученику было легче не запутаться в грамматике при ответе на вопрос. Также в ответах присутствуют клише I would advise, Personally I think, и тематические выражения to take up a hobby, to start a hobby, I’m interested in.

    На самом деле, задание совсем не сложное, и при грамотной тренировке можно его делать практически без ошибок уже через 2 занятия.

    Надо их проштудировать по любому англоязычному учебнику (мне нравятсяGateway B1+, New Opportunities: Pre-Intermediate или Solutions: Pre-Intermediate, попутно вбивая в голову ученика устойчивые выражения для общения на ту или иную тему. Здесь особо усердствовать не стоит, не более 10 фраз, хорошо отработанных, вполне хватит. Экзамен — всегда стресс, дай бог три выражения из списка вспомнятся.

    И периодически тренировать это задание (можно использовать задание 1 из прошлогоднего ОГЭ, примеры к нему есть в свободном доступе в Интернете в неограниченном количестве), положив перед глазами ученика секундомер с выставленными 2 минутами. Обязательно после выполнения задания заставлять его рефлексировать — ответил ли он на все поставленные вопросы, было ли в ответе вступление и заключение, какие тематические выражения и слова-связки использовал.

    Свой ответ, еще раз повторюсь, следует строить по схеме: вступление  — ответ на три вопроса по порядку — заключение + тематические выражения и слова-связки.

    Пример

    Для наглядности хочу привести пример, как бы я ответила на задание 3 устной части ОГЭ.

    Task 3. You are going to give a talk about photography. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.
    Remember to say:
    why people like taking pictures∙
    why taking photos is more popular today than it was in the past∙
    what the best photo you have ever taken is∙
    You have to talk continuously.

    Ответ:

    Now I’m going to give a talk about photography.

    1. In my opinion, taking pictures is really popular now. Many of my friends and classmates have cameras in their mobiles which they use to take photos of everything they like.
    1. Today taking photos is more popular than it was in the past because cameras are less expensive and many people can afford them. You can even take pictures using camera in your mobile! Also, there are a lot of social networks, for example Facebook or Vkontakte where people post photos and share them with friends.
    2. Personally I have one really great photo. It was taken last year in Rome. You can see my mother and me on it. We are standing near a beautiful fountain in the center of the city. The sun is shining and we are smiling.

    In the end I would like to say that taking photos helps us save one of the most precious things in life — our memories, which can always be with us when we look at this or that picture.

    А теперь разберем ответ.

    Коммуникативная задача: на все три вопроса дан ответ.

    Организация высказывания: слова-связки присутствуют, есть вступительная и финальная фразы (выделены курсивом).

    Языковое оформление: лексика — использованы тематические слова и выражения — take pictures, photos, photography, post photos.

    Грамматика — употреблены три времени — Present Simple, Present Continuous (при описании фото) и Past Simple, сравнительная степень (less expensive), превосходная степень (the most precious), пассивный залог (was taken), модальный глагол can.

    Разнообразные грамматические структуры добавляют привлекательности ответу, и после того, как само задание будет оттренировано, надо заставлять ученика разнообразить оформление своего ответа.

    Чтение вслух

    В конце статьи поделюсь секретами подготовки к первому заданию устной части ОГЭ, а именно — как успеть прочитать фрагмент текста за заветные 120 секунд.

    Допустим, освоили вы правила чтения, но в 2 минуты все равно не укладываетесь. Что делать? Очевидно, отчитывать тексты. Сама их подбираю (текст должен быть научно-публицистический), вот пример:

    Computers have been around for over sixty years and they have changed our lives. It is a well-known fact that the first modern computer began operating in the USA in 1945. This huge machine was the size of a large room. It was also very slow and so complicated to use that only an expert could operate it. That’s very different from modern PCs which are so user-friendly that anyone can use them.

    During the 1970s, tiny electronic microchips became more common. By the 1980s and 90s, home computers were becoming smaller, faster and cheaper. As a result, more people bought them, so computers became more wide-spread.

    (Взяла из Activate B1)

    И отрабатываем чтение вслух вот так:

    1. Ученик читает про себя, думая над незнакомыми словами и где поставить паузу (даю 1.5 минуты, как и на ОГЭ).
    2. Читает вслух, я корректирую правильность, потом вместе разбираем деление фрагмента на смысловые паузы. Обращаю внимание ученика, за сколько он прочитал текст первый раз.
    3. Затем следует предпоследнее чтение, красивое и правильное, где я не обращаю внимания на скорость.
    4. А в последний раз ученик должен и прочитать правильно, и уложиться в 2 минуты. Если этого сделать не получается, стараюсь вызвать чувство стыда и желание в следующий раз справиться лучше.

    Кстати, чтение вслух и говорение тесно связаны. Чем быстрее темп речи, тем лучше читаешь вслух. Поэтому крайне полезно пересказывать все, к чему душа лежит — биографию любимого певца, содержание интересной книги или сериала.

    Устная часть ОГЭ по английскому языку: сложности

    Сдача устной части ОГЭ по английскому языку проходит в отдельный день и включает 3 задания на проверку уровня владения речью. Вести беседу школьнику придется с компьютером, что должно исключить действие человеческого фактора. Во время экзамена ведется аудиозапись, которую впоследствии прослушивают эксперты и выставляют свои оценки.

    Первое задание: чтение вслух

    Экзаменуемому предлагается небольшой текст (чаще всего научно-популярной тематики). Дается время на подготовку, но всего 1,5 минуты. Выполнение самого задание ограничено 2 минутами.

    При прохождении этого испытания важно не торопиться, быть внимательным и учесть два аспекта:

    • интонация с четким разделением фраз и соблюдением смысловых пауз;
    • произношение. Старайтесь не путать слова, схожие в написании, но различные по звучанию, а также правильно проговаривать специфичные для английского языка звуки.

    Максимальная оценка за это задание — 2 балла. При наличии немногочисленных и несущественных ошибок можно получить 1 балл.

    Второе задание: диалог

    Вам предстоит принять участие в условном опросе с 6 вопросами на заданную тему — хобби, школа, семья, домашние животные, путешествия и т. д. Вопросы озвучивает компьютер, и на каждый из них необходимо дать развернутый аргументированный ответ, на каждый из которых дается 60 секунд. Этого достаточно, чтобы сформулировать продуманные фразы и поправиться, если Вы оговорились.

    Чтобы успешно пройти данное задание, внимательно слушайте вопросы. Это поможет дать адекватный ответ. Кроме того, в вопросах Вы найдете скрытые подсказки по грамматике, которые сможете использовать при построении фраз. Отвечать односложно нельзя. Необходимо каждый раз выстраивать полное предложение по всем правилам.

    Если Вы не расслышали или не совсем поняли вопрос с первого раза, повторить его нельзя. В такой ситуации можно использовать какую-нибудь дежурную фразу, вроде «Sorry, I don’t remember exactly» или «If I got it right, I would say that…». За каждый верный ответ на вопрос Вы получите 1 балл, а в совокупности — 6.

    Третье задание: монолог

    Вам предлагается порассуждать на заданную тему с опорой на предложенный план. Список тем, которые Вам могут попасться на экзамене, размещен на сайте ФИПИ.

    При выполнении третьего задания необходимо продемонстрировать умение выстраивать связную речь, выражать свою точку зрения. По каждому пункту плана монолога нужно сформулировать тезис, привести аргументы и/или примеры. В конце следует сделать вывод.
