1 Pufferfish contain a powerful poison called

‘tetrodoxin’ in their organs and skin that

can kill a person within hours. But to the

Japanese, pufferfish (known as ‘Fugu’) is a

delicacy – an expensive dish that people

enjoy eating on special occasions. Tokyo has

between 700 and 800 restaurants that serve

pufferfish. Chefs have to pass a very difficult

exam before they are allowed to prepare

this hazardous dish.

2 For over 3,000 years, the Chinese have

used a special range of medical therapies

to treat people who are ill. These

therapies include herbal medicine,

acupuncture and massage, and they are

still a very important part of the public

health care system in China. Today, some

Western doctors also use Chinese medicine.

They use it to treat illnesses that

Western medicine can not cure.

3 Earplugs are a wonderful way to keep out

noise. The trouble is, they keep out the

sounds you want to hear, too! But don’t

worry because in a few years time, you

will be able to buy earplugs that let you

hear the sounds you want to hear and

block out the ones you don’t! The scientists

who are developing these earplugs

hope they will be in shops by 2013.

4 In the US, Thanksgiving Day is an annual

one-day holiday on the fourth Thursday

of November. On this day, family and

friends all get together to eat a large

meal and to give thanks for what they

have. Certain kinds of food are traditionally

served for Thanksgiving dinner –

most famously, roast turkey, mashed

potatoes and pumpkin pie.

5 The telephone has changed our lives

more than most people realise. The

telephone made instant communication

possible and led to other amazing inventions

such as the television and the computer.

Without the telephone, there

would be no Internet, no radio and no

mobile phones. Today, a world without

the telephone is unimaginable.

6 The Esperanto language was created in

the late 18th century by Dr Ludovic

Lazarus Zamenhof. It took him about 10

years to develop. Dr Zamenhof created

Esperanto because he wanted to encourage

peace and understanding between

people of different countries. He thought

that inventing a simple language that

everyone in the world could learn to

speak very easily would help achieve this.

7 By watching other people’s body language,

facial expressions and tone of

voice, you can learn a lot. For example, if

your friend tells you he is not angry with

you, but his hands are clenched, his eyes

are narrow and his voice is shaking, you

can be sure that he is. So, non-verbal

signals can show others what we are

really thinking and feeling!

The Crocodile

(a text in English for upper-intermediate)

Read the text and fill in the gaps with phrases A-G. There is one phrase you will not need.

How do you feel about crocodiles? Do you consider them fierce animals with brains as small as walnuts? This is not the right point of view for many reasons. They’ve obviously deserved some courtesy if not love. And the first reason is that they are much older than us, people, [1]

Indeed, the crocodile is one of the oldest animals on the Earth — they lived in the times of dinosaurs and haven’t changed much since then. It’s a live artefact and many scientists adore it for that. The famous British naturalist Charles Darwin, who invented the evolution theory, wrote that «it’s not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change.» The crocodile adapts to the environment perfectly [2]

Crocodiles don’t produce much energy themselves but rely on solar energy to heat the body and then move to shade or into the water if they need some cooling. Economical and practical, isn’t it?

They are able to control their blood circulation system, i.e. to slow down the blood flow when necessary, [з]

The most amazing fact about crocodiles is that they are able to regulate the work of their heart. The fact is that unlike other reptiles, crocodiles have very complicated four-chamber heart. However, when they dive they make the heart work as a three-chamber one. The crocodile is carnivorous, which means it eats other animals and undoubtedly can be dangerous to people. However, [4]

Like powerful weapons crocodiles are deadly dangerous only to people who don’t know «how they work» and are ignorant of their lifestyle. The crocodile is definitely not a pet and wants to be taken seriously.

Once a worker in the Australian Zoo was badly injured by a crocodile. The man was careless enough to enter the hedged territory where the crocodile was kept. He wanted to trim the grass to make the territory look nicer and didn’t expect the slow looking crocodile to be so fast. The crocodile wasn’t hungry, but he reacted to the vibration caused by the trimming machine.

Vibration is absolutely irresistible for a crocodile, [5]

After the accident the crocodile was sold to a private crocodile farm in Queensland, and still lives there. The old huge crocodile (it’s about 70 years old and four meters long) is a great attraction to tourists. The son of the owner of the farm, who guides tourists round the territory, doesn’t conceal his affection towards the crocodile. He comes very close to the pool, entices the crocodile ashore, and feeds it from his hand. It looks very risky, [б]

Knowledge, experience and love help him control the huge and scary creature.

Answer the questions:

  1. How can the crocodile use the environment very efficiently?
  2. How has it managed to survive through lots of catastrophes and climate changes?
  3. What can the young man do when he knows how the crocodile «works»?
  4. What makes the crocodile attack?
  5. Why do people present the crocodile as a source of fatal unavoidable evil?
  6. Why is the crocodile almost independent of the outer conditions?

There are a lot of people in the world who have chosen charity as their main mission in life. One of the most famous missionaries was Mother Teresa. She lived the hard life of the poor alongside them; she knew how it felt sleeping on hard floors and living on dirty streets.

I had first become acquainted with my Italian friend by meeting him at certain great houses where he taught his own language and I taught drawing. All I then knew of the history of his life was that he had left Italy for political reasons; and that he had been for many years respectably established in London as a teacher.

Without being actually a dwarf – for he was perfectly well-proportioned from head to foot – Pesca was, I think, the smallest human being I ever saw. Remarkable anywhere, by his personal appearance, he was still further distinguished among the mankind by the eccentricity of his character. The ruling idea of Peska’s life now was to show his gratitude to the country that had given him a shelter by doing his utmost to turn himself into an Englishman. The Professor aspired to become an Englishman in his habits and amusements, as well as in his personal appearance. Finding us distinguished, as a nation, by our love of athletic exercises, the little man, devoted himself to all our English sports and pastimes, firmly persuaded that he could adopt our national amusements by an effort of will the same way as he had adopted our national gaiters and our national white hat.

I had seen him risk his limbs blindly unlike others at a fox-hunt and in a cricket field; and soon afterwards I saw him risk his life, just as blindly, in the sea at Brighton.

We had met there accidentally, and were bathing together. If we had been engaged in any exercise peculiar to my own nation I should, of course, have looked after Pesca carefully; but as foreigners are generally quite as well able to take care of themselves in the water as Englishmen, it never occurred to me that the art of swimming might merely add one more to the list of manly exercises which the Professor believed that he could learn on the spot. Soon after we had both struck out from shore, I stopped, finding my friend did not follow me, and turned round to look for him. To my horror and amazement, I saw nothing between me and the beach but two little white arms which struggled for an instant above the surface of the water, and then disappeared from view. When I dived for him, the poor little man was lying quietly at the bottom, looking smaller than I had ever seen him look before.

When he had thoroughly recovered himself, his warm Southern nature broke through all artificial English restraints in a moment. He overwhelmed me with the wildest expressions of affection and in his exaggerated Italian way declared that he should never be happy again until he rendered me some service which I might remember to the end of my days.

Little did I think then – little did I think afterwards – that the opportunity of serving me was soon to come; that he was eagerly to seize it on the instant; and that by so doing he was to turn the whole current of my existence into a new channel. Yet so it was. If I had not dived for Professor Pesca when he lay under water, I should never, perhaps, have heard even the name of the woman, who now directs the purpose of my life.

7.Peska managed to

  • A) change the author’s life completely.
  • B) become English to the core.
  • C) meet a woman who later directed his life.
  • D) turn his existence into a new channel.

1.Peska taught

  • A) drawing.
  • B) Italian.
  • C) English.
  • D) politics.

В тексте читаем «my Italian friend … he taught his own language and I taught drawing».

2.Peska impressed people by being

  • A) well-built.
  • B) well-mannered.
  • C) strange.
  • D) ill-mannered.

В тексте читаем «Remarkable anywhere, by his personal appearance, he was still further distinguished among the mankind by the eccentricity of his character.»

3.Peska tried to become a true Englishman because he

  • A) was thankful to the country that had adopted him.
  • B) enjoyed Englishman’s pastimes and amusements.
  • C) loved the way the English did athletic exercises.
  • D) was fond of the eccentric fashions of the English.

Отсылки ко всем ответам есть в этом фрагменте текста: «The ruling idea of Peska’s life now was to show his gratitude to the country that had given him a shelter by doing his utmost to turn himself into an Englishman. The Professor aspired to become an Englishman in his habits and amusements, as well as in his personal appearance. Finding us distinguished, as a nation, by our love of athletic exercises, the little man, devoted himself to all our English sports and pastimes, firmly persuaded that he could adopt our national amusements by an effort of will the same way as he had adopted our national gaiters and our national white hat«.

A) was thankful to the country that had adopted him.

Находим синонимичную фразу: «The ruling idea of Peska’s life now was to show his gratitude to the country that had given him a shelter«. Be thankful = show his gratitude, adopt him = give him shelter.

B) enjoyed Englishman’s pastimes and amusements.

«Pastimes and amusements» несколько раз употребляются в тексте, однако из текста понятно, что это было скорее средством, с помощью которого герой становился англичанином, а не причиной его выбора: «the Professor aspired to become an Englishman in his habits and amusements«.

C) loved the way the English did athletic exercises.

В тексте читаем: «Finding us distinguished, as a nation, by our love of athletic exercises, the little man, devoted himself to all our English sports and pastimes, firmly persuaded that he could adopt our national amusements by an effort of will«. Из отрывка становится ясно, что герой занимался спортом не из любви к нему, а усилием воли (by an effort of will), потому что считал это неотъемлимой чертой англичан («Finding us distinguished, as a nation, by our love of athletic exercises«) и обязательным условием, чтобы стать настоящим англичанином.

D) was fond of the eccentric fashions of the English.

Находим в тексте: «he could adopt our national amusements by an effort of will the same way as he had adopted our national gaiters and our national white hat«.

4.‘… risk his limbs blindly’ means Peska

  • A) didn’t look where he went.
  • B) was unaware of danger from others.
  • C) caused a problem for others.
  • D) acted rather thoughtlessly.

Даже если вы не знаете, что limbs — это «конечности», а blindly — «слепо» или «в слепую», ответить на вопрос можно, изучив контекст: «I had seen him risk his limbs blindly unlike others at a fox-hunt and in a cricket field; and soon afterwards I saw him risk his life, just as blindly, in the sea at Brighton.» Во-первых, можно заметить паралель между risk his limbs blindly и risk his life just as blindly, чтобы понять, что герой имеет дело с опасностью или риском не для других, а самого себя, то есть ответ D неверен. Говорится только о том, что «I had seen him risk his limbs blindly unlike others», что означает лишь то, что другие участники были осторожнее и что ответ B исключен.

5.The author didn’t look after Peska carefully because

  • A) they both had been engaged in the peculiar English exercise.
  • B) foreigners were generally bathing not far from the shore.
  • C) the author was sure that Peska would learn swimming on the spot.
  • D) the author was sure that Peska was a very good swimmer.

В тексте находим: «If we had been engaged in any exercise peculiar to my own nation I should, of course, have looked after Pesca carefully; but as foreigners are generally quite as well able to take care of themselves in the water as Englishmen, it never occurred to me that the art of swimming might merely add one more to the list of manly exercises which the Professor believed that he could learn on the spot». Получается, что «we had been engaged in the peculiar English exercise» — ситуация сугубо гипотетическая, и на самом деле, ее не было, значит ответ А — неправильный. Предложение «it never occurred to me that the art of swimming might add one more to the list of exercises which the Professor believed that he could learn on the spot» опровергает ответ С, т.к. Фрагмент «as foreigners are generally quite as well able to take care of themselves in the water as Englishmen» предполагает, что иностранцы (foreigners), по мнению автора, так же хорошо умеют плавать (are quite as well able to take care of themselves in the water ), как и англичане (Englishman).

6.Peska wanted to do the author some favour as

  • A) it was in his warm nature.
  • B) the author had saved his life.
  • C) the author was his best friend.
  • D) he wanted to look English.

Читаем: «When he had thoroughly recovered himself, his warm Southern nature broke through all artificial English restraints in a moment. He overwhelmed me with the wildest expressions of affection and in his exaggerated Italian way declared that he should never be happy again until he rendered me some service which I might remember to the end of my days». B) the author had saved his life — верный. В тексте нигде не упоминается, что «the author was his best friend», значит ответ С — точно ошибочный. Герой действительно «wanted to look English», но не в момент спасения (his warm Southern nature broke through all artificial English restraints in a moment), это опровергает ответ D. В тексте упоминается «warm Southern nature», но как следствие спасения, а не причина, по которой герой решил оказать услугу автору, значит ответ А — тоже неправильный.

7.Peska managed to

  • A) change the author’s life completely.
  • B) become English to the core.
  • C) meet a woman who later directed his life.
  • D) turn his existence into a new channel.

В тексте же ситуация обстоит с точностью наоборот: «by so doing he was to turn the whole current of my existence into a new channel. If I had not dived for Professor Pesca when he lay under water, I should never, perhaps, have heard even the name of the woman, who now directs the purpose of my life.» В тексте нет подтверждения фразе «Peska managed to become English to the core», наоборот, в предыдущем параграфе мы видели, как он совершенно забыл об этом, значит ответ B — неверный. Остается ответ А, который подтверждается словами из текста: «he was to turn the whole current of my existence into a new channel. If I had not dived for Professor Pesca when he lay under water, I should never, perhaps, have heard even the name of the woman, who now directs the purpose of my life.»

According to the author driveless cars will become cheap enough for most people to buy within the following …

Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the text?

  1. a driverless car operator won’t be resposible for accidents
  2. the age required to operate a driverless car is likely to rise
  3. driverless cars may increase the number of road accidents
  4. the driverless car will voice-activated

Чтобы убедиться в правильности варианта 1 внимательно смотрим на первое предложение второго абзаца, в котором есть фраза — the shifting of accident liability to manufactures — перенос ответственности за аварии на производителя.

To operate a driverless car, their owners will be required to…

  1. set the destination on the GPS
  2. have experience in programming
  3. obtain a collision insurance
  4. have a special license

Which of the following, according to the author, will a driverless car have?

  1. gas and brake pedals
  2. a steering wheel
  3. video displays
  4. a turn signal arm

Здесь вообще не глядя в текст можно догадаться о правильном ответе, но, все таки, давайте взглянем на первое предложение пятого параграфа — each passenger will have a personal video display informing about a current location — у каждого пассажира будет свой дисплей, показывающий текущее местоположение (ответ 3).

The author claims that with the introduction of driverless cars…

  1.  personal vehicle ownership will increase
  2. the number of vehicles on the roads will diminish
  3. people will rent vehicles insted of buying them
  4. vehicle owners will spend more money on insurance

According to the author, driverless cars will be…

  1. as important socially as the Internet
  2. enthusiastically accepted by the people
  3. operated without transitional delays
  4. used by people with caution at first

The attitude of the author towards the driverless cars may be described as…

  1. optimistic
  2. negative

A. The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world’s largest telescope and it is taking scientists further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine, giving astronomers detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos. One day, we will have a much clearer picture of how our planet was born.

B. The latest development in the debate amongst scientists about what killed the prehistoric dinosaurs is the suggestion that acid rain was the cause. Some geologists suggest that a large meteor hitting the earth at 65 kilometres per second would have led to strongly acidic rain falling all over the world. This idea is fascinating but it would mean the dinosaurs would all have died within a very short time.

C. In 1948, a British farmer discovered an interesting lump of metal while ploughing his field. At first he thought the metal bits were parts of an old bed. Then more ‘parts of old beds’ turned up and the farmer took them to the local museum. ‘But these bits are priceless!’ exclaimed the keeper of the museum. ‘They are Iron Age jewellery and coins!’ Over the next 40 years, more and more items were found in the same field.

D. Rats may have had a bit of a hard time over the years but these days lots of people are forgetting about guinea-pigs and hamsters and are buying rats instead. Domestic rats aren’t the same as the ones that run around rubbish bins — they’re actually quite cute. They are very intelligent and can be trained like dogs. They come in different colours and — a big bonus — they will eat anything!

E. In Western cultures, people look each other in the eye during a conversation to show interest and trust, but in many Asian countries, it’s rude to look people in the eye, especially a superior such as a teacher. One of the most basic and powerful signals is when a person crosses his or her arms across the chest. This can indicate that a person is putting up an unconscious barrier between themselves and others.

F. Earthquakes happen all the time in all parts of the world but we don’t notice most of them because they are small. However, big earthquakes are really dangerous. They can make buildings fall down, set off landslides and do other deadly things. The highest death toll caused by an earthquake was in China in 1556, when at least 830,000 people died.

G. According to scientists, Americans watch more TV on average than any other nationality. In fact, many people, particularly children, sit for 35 hours or more per week glued to the box. What’s wrong with watching all that TV? Studies have linked it to everything from obesity to aggression in children not to mention that it puts your mind into a sort of sedated state. Habitual television watching, over long periods of time, has been known to cause depression, and anger.

‘Have you written a letter to the Froplinsons?’ asked Egbert.

‘No,’ said Janetta, with a note of tired defiance in her voice; ‘I’ve written eleven letters today expressing surprise and gratitude for sundry unmerited gifts, but I haven’t written to the Froplinsons yet.’

‘Someone will have to do it,’ said Egbert.

‘I don’t dispute the necessity, but I don’t think that someone should be me,’ said Janetta. ‘I wouldn’t mind writing a letter of angry recrimination or heartless satire to some suitable recipient. In fact, I should rather enjoy it, but I’ve come to the end of my capacity for expressing servile amiability. Eleven letters today and nine yesterday, all couched in the same strain of ecstatic thankfulness: really, you can’t expect me to sit down to another. There is such a thing as writing oneself out.’

‘I’ve written nearly as many,’ said Egbert, ‘and I’ve had my usual business correspondence to get through, too. Besides, I don’t know what it was that the Froplinsons sent us.’ ‘A William the Conqueror calendar,’ said Janetta, ‘with a quotation of one of his great thoughts for every day in the year.’

‘Impossible,’ said Egbert; ‘he didn’t have three hundred and sixty-five thoughts in the whole of his life, or, if he did, he kept them to himself.’

‘Well, it was William Wordsworth, then,’ said Janetta; ‘I know William came into it somewhere.’

‘That sounds more probable,’ said Egbert; ‘well, let’s collaborate on this letter and get it done. I’ll dictate, and you can scribble it down. ‘Dear Mrs. Froplinson, thank you and your husband so much for the very pretty calendar you sent us. It was very good of you to think of us.’ ’

‘You can’t possibly say that,’ said Janetta, laying down her pen. ‘We sent them something on the twenty-second,’ said Janetta, ‘so they simply had to think of us. There was no getting away from it.’

‘What did we send them?’ asked Egbert gloomily.

‘Bridge-markers,’ said Janetta, ‘in a cardboard case, with some inanity about ‘digging for fortune with a royal spade’ emblazoned on the cover. The moment I saw it in the shop I said to myself ‘Froplinsons’ and to the attendant ‘How much?’ When he said ‘Ninepence,’ I gave him their address, jabbed our card in, paid tenpence or elevenpence to cover the postage, and thanked heaven. With less sincerity and infinitely more trouble they eventually thanked me.’

‘The Froplinsons don’t play bridge,’ said Egbert.

‘One is not supposed to notice social deformities of that sort,’ said Janetta; ‘it wouldn’t be polite. Besides, what trouble did they take to find out whether we read Wordsworth with gladness? For all they knew or cared we might be frantically embedded in the belief that all poetry begins and ends with John Masefield, and it might infuriate or depress us to have a daily sample of Wordsworthian products flung at us.’

‘Well, let’s get on with the letter,’ said Egbert. ‘How clever of you to guess that Wordsworth is our favourite poet.’

Again Janetta laid down her pen.

‘Do you realise what that means?’ she asked; ‘a Wordsworth booklet next Christmas, and another calendar the Christmas after, with the same problem of having to write suitable letters of thankfulness. No, the best thing to do is to drop all further allusion to the calendar and switch off on to some other topic.’

‘But what other topic?’

‘Oh, something like this: ‘What do you think of the New Year Honours List? A friend of ours made such a clever remark when he read it.’ Then you can stick in any remark that comes into your head; it needn’t be clever. The Froplinsons won’t know whether it is or isn’t.’

‘We don’t even know on which side they are in politics,’ objected Egbert; ‘and anyhow you can’t suddenly dismiss the subject of the calendar. Surely there must be some intelligent remark that can be made about it.’

‘Well, we can’t think of one,’ said Janetta wearily; ‘the fact is, we’ve both written ourselves out.’

There was a long silence, the forlorn silence of those who are bereft of hope and have almost ceased to care. Then Egbert started from his seat with an air of resolution. The light of battle was in his eyes.

‘Let me come to the writing-table,’ he exclaimed; ‘I’m going to write to the editor of every enlightened and influential newspaper in the Kingdom, I’m going to suggest that there should be a sort of epistolary Truce of God during the festivities of Christmas and New Year. From the twenty-fourth of December to the third or fourth of January it shall be considered an offence against good sense and good feeling to write or expect any letter or communication that does not deal with the necessary events of the moment. Answers to invitations, arrangements about trains, renewal of club subscriptions, and, of course, all the ordinary everyday affairs of business, sickness, engaging new cooks, and so forth, these will be dealt with in the usual manner as something inevitable. But all the devastating accretions of correspondence, incident to the festive season, these should be swept away to give the season a chance of being really festive.’

‘But you would have to make some acknowledgment of presents received,’ objected Janetta; ‘otherwise people would never know whether they had arrived safely.’

‘Of course, I have thought of that,’ said Egbert; ‘every present that was sent off would be accompanied by a ticket bearing the date of dispatch and the signature of the sender, and some conventional hieroglyphic to show that it was intended to be a Christmas or New Year gift; there would be a counterfoil with space for the recipient’s name and the date of arrival, and all you would have to do would be to sign and date the counterfoil, add a conventional hieroglyphic indicating heartfelt thanks and gratified surprise, put the thing into an envelope and post it.’

‘It sounds delightfully simple,’ said Janetta wistfully, ‘but people would consider it too perfunctory.’

‘It is not a bit more perfunctory than the present system,’ said Egbert; ‘I have only the same conventional language of gratitude at my disposal with which to thank dear old Colonel Chuttle for his perfectly delicious Stilton, which we shall devour to the last morsel, and the Froplinsons for their calendar, which we shall never look at. So you see the present system of acknowledgment is just as perfunctory and conventional as the counterfoil business would be, only ten times more tiresome and brain-racking.’

‘Your plan would certainly bring the idea of a Happy Christmas a step nearer realisation,’ said Janetta. ‘Meanwhile, what am I to say to the Froplinsons?’
